What Is My Hair Type is a free hair type test that works from one close-up photo. It is built and run by 1000 Ventures, a small team that makes free, simple tools for questions people search for every day.
Why we built it
"What is my hair type?" is one of the first questions people ask when they start caring for their natural hair. The usual answer is a chart of drawings or stock photos, and plenty of people stare at it and still cannot decide between two types. We wanted a tool that looks at your actual hair and gives a straight answer, with an honest note when you sit between two types.
We also did not want your photo on our servers. So we trained our own model and made it small enough to run inside your browser. Nothing you upload leaves your device.
How the test works
The model reads the curl pattern in a close-up of your hair and returns one of 12 types from 1A to 4C. It was trained on about 7,000 hair photos and close-up crops, and we tested it on photos it had never seen. The method page has the details and the accuracy numbers, including where it still makes mistakes.
What this site is not
We are not hairdressers, trichologists or doctors, and the test is not a diagnosis. It names your curl pattern so you can pick products and routines that suit it. If you are losing hair or have a scalp problem, please see a doctor or a dermatologist.
