Hair type quiz
Answer five quick questions about how your hair dries and you get your hair type, from 1A to 4C, plus care tips that fit. It works best on clean hair that dried on its own.
How the hair type quiz works
The first question sorts your hair into one of the four main types by its shape when it dries. The second asks one thing that separates the subtypes in that group: strand thickness for straight hair, where the waves start for wavy hair, curl width for curly hair and the coil shape for coily hair.
The last three questions do not change your type. They tell us how oily your scalp gets, how your hair reacts to humidity and how fast it takes up water, so the tips fit your hair rather than only your type.
Quiz or photo test: which should I use?
Use both if you can. The quiz is quick and needs no camera, and it is good at the main type. Words like "tight" or "loose" mean different things to different people, so the subtype is rougher. The photo hair type test measures curl size from a close-up and is more precise at the subtype.
Tips for a fair answer
- Answer for wash day hair that dried on its own, not for your usual styled look.
- Look at the middle and back of your head. The hairline is often looser.
- If two answers both fit, pick the one that covers most of your hair.
Not sure which type you are? Take one close-up of your hair and the free hair type test tells you in seconds.
