What does 2B hair look like?

2B hair has clear, defined S-shaped waves that start from about the middle of the hair. The roots and crown are flatter, and the waves get stronger toward the ends. It often has some frizz on the surface, especially in humid weather.

2B strands are a bit thicker and more oval than 2A, so the waves are tighter and hold their shape. The roots stay flatter because the weight of the hair pulls on them.

How do I know if I have 2B hair?

Check it on wash day, after your hair has dried on its own with no styling products. Look at a section from the middle of your head, not the hairline, which is often looser.

2B waves are more defined than 2A and start higher up. Compared with 2C, they start lower and do not form ringlets. If some sections twist into loose spirals, especially underneath, you are closer to 2C.

How to care for 2B hair

  1. Wash two or three times a week with a sulfate-free shampoo.
  2. Use a medium conditioner and detangle with your fingers while it is in.
  3. Apply a curl cream or mousse to soaking wet hair, then a light gel for hold.
  4. Plop the hair in a cotton T-shirt for 10 to 20 minutes, then diffuse or air-dry.
  5. Once dry, scrunch out the crunch from the gel with a drop of oil on your hands.

Best products for 2B hair

Mousse, light curl creams and medium-hold gels suit 2B. A sea salt spray adds texture on second-day hair. Avoid heavy butters, which can flatten the roots even more.

Your hair's porosity matters as much as its type when you pick products. Low porosity hair needs lighter products and a little warmth to let them in, while high porosity hair needs richer ones to seal moisture. Our hair porosity test shows how to check yours.

Styles and cuts for 2B hair

Layers lift the flat crown and let the waves spring up. Clipping the roots while the hair dries adds volume. 2B waves look great with a side part, which gives the crown more lift.
