What does 2C hair look like?
2C hair is the curliest wavy type. The S-waves are deep and start close to the roots, and some sections twist into loose spirals. It is usually thick, with plenty of volume. Frizz is common, and the hair can feel dry at the ends.
2C strands are thicker and more oval than 2A and 2B, so they bend more tightly. The extra bends slow down scalp oil, so the ends get drier and frizz more easily.
How do I know if I have 2C hair?
Check it on wash day, after your hair has dried on its own with no styling products. Look at a section from the middle of your head, not the hairline, which is often looser.
2C sits on the border with curly hair. If most of your hair forms round, springy loops rather than S-waves, you are probably 3A. If the waves start lower and there are no ringlets, look at 2B.

How to care for 2C hair
- Wash two or three times a week with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo.
- Use a rich conditioner and detangle with your fingers while it is in.
- Apply a leave-in or curl cream and then a gel to soaking wet hair.
- Diffuse on low heat or air-dry, and do not touch it until it is fully dry.
- Use a deep conditioning mask once a week.
Best products for 2C hair
2C hair needs more moisture than other wavy types. Curl creams, leave-ins and medium to strong gels work well together. Heavier oils are fine on the ends. A satin pillowcase cuts frizz overnight.
Your hair's porosity matters as much as its type when you pick products. Low porosity hair needs lighter products and a little warmth to let them in, while high porosity hair needs richer ones to seal moisture. Our hair porosity test shows how to check yours.
Styles and cuts for 2C hair
Curly cuts, cut dry and curl by curl, often suit 2C hair well. Layers keep the shape round instead of triangular. Many people with 2C hair find their pattern gets tighter once they stop brushing and use gel.
